Why employers run workplace health screenings

Roughly 90% of the $4.5 trillion the United States spends on healthcare each year goes to chronic and mental-health conditions, per the CDC. Most of the biggest drivers — hypertension, dyslipidemia, prediabetes, obesity — are silent until they trigger a claim. A workplace health screening surfaces those risks early, gives employees a starting number to work from, and gives benefits teams the population-level view needed to design a plan around actual workforce risk.

PicMed delivers that program end to end: onsite events, offsite fallback for remote employees, HIPAA-compliant reporting, and integration into the wellness incentive design you already have — or the one we help you build.

What a PicMed workplace health screening includes

Every program is scoped to your goals. The building blocks are the same.

Biometric screening

Height, weight, BMI, waist circumference, resting blood pressure, and a lipid + glucose panel via fingerstick or venipuncture. Optional tobacco (cotinine) testing where your incentive design uses it. See onsite biometric screening for the full clinical detail.

Health risk assessment (HRA)

A validated questionnaire covering lifestyle, family history, mental health, and preventive-care completion. Combined with biometric numbers, it produces a personalized risk report for the employee and a population-level view for the benefits team. See health risk assessment for employers.

Optional lab panels

For employers who want deeper insight than a fingerstick can deliver, we run venipuncture events tied to a CLIA-certified reference lab. Panel options span basic metabolic, advanced lipid (particle size), inflammatory markers, thyroid, hormone, bone health, and cancer screening tests. See the full screening test menu.

Optional coaching and referrals

Screening data flows into a follow-up track — telephonic coaching, referrals to primary care, or handoff to your existing wellness platform. We integrate with the major benefits and wellness platforms your team already uses.

Delivery options for every worker

The mix is yours to choose. Most PicMed clients run a hybrid.

Onsite events. Our default. RN/LPN-administered fingerstick or venipuncture screenings at your worksites, in all 50 states. Typical throughput is 15–20 minutes per participant with fingerstick, 10–15 minutes with venipuncture.

Offsite / PSC network. Employees who cannot attend an onsite event complete their screening at a national patient service center. Results roll into the same MyPicMed dashboard as your onsite data.

At-home kits. Fully distributed workforces can receive shipped fingerstick kits with mail-in results processing. Ideal for fully remote employers and for closing participation gaps at multi-site organizations.

Combined events. The most efficient design is a single “wellness week” — flu shots, biometrics, and HRA in one visit. See onsite flu shot clinics for how the combined event runs.

Test menu snapshot

The list below is the summary view. The full clinical breakdown with reference ranges and use cases lives on the screening test menu page.

Fingerstick point-of-care (immediate results)

  • Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides
  • Blood glucose
  • HbA1c
  • hs-CRP (inflammatory marker)
  • ALT / AST (liver enzymes)

Venipuncture (reference lab, results 3–5 business days)

  • Basic metabolic panel and full CBC
  • Advanced lipid panel (LPP particle size)
  • Inflammatory panel (ESR, hs-CRP, homocysteine)
  • Thyroid panel
  • Vitamin D and other nutrient markers
  • Sex-specific hormone panels
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)

Vitals (every event)

  • Height, weight, BMI
  • Waist circumference
  • Resting blood pressure
  • Optional cotinine (tobacco use)

CLIA-waived point-of-care equipment is used for immediate-result fingerstick panels. All venipuncture samples run at CLIA-certified reference labs.

Reporting for benefits and wellness teams

MyPicMed portal. HIPAA-compliant aggregate dashboards showing participation, biometric distribution, and risk-stratification for your workforce. No individual PHI ever crosses to the benefits team.

Individual participant view. Employees see their own results, printable summary, and follow-up recommendations.

HRA integration. Screening numbers auto-populate the HRA report so employees see a single, unified view.

Incentive tracking. Whether your design is participation-based (show up, earn X) or outcome-based (hit a target or complete an alternative, earn X), MyPicMed tracks completion at the individual level and reports it back to your benefits admin, payroll system, or wellness platform.

Integration. We push aggregate and de-identified data feeds to the major wellness platforms, TPAs, and benefits admins on request.

Compliance framework

We build every program to the standards that matter to legal, privacy, and benefits.

  • HIPAA. PHI encrypted in transit and at rest. Role-based access. BAAs in place with every subprocessor.
  • ADA. Screenings are voluntary, accommodations available on request, and no coverage or benefits decisions are made on individual screening results.
  • GINA. Family medical history collected only via voluntary HRA responses; genetic information is neither requested nor stored.
  • EEOC wellness rules. Incentive design reviewed against current guidance; we flag structures that raise risk.
  • CLIA. Waived point-of-care instruments for fingerstick components; CLIA-certified reference labs for all venipuncture testing.

W-2 clinical staff (not 1099) means the same clinical SOPs, background checks, and liability coverage on every event.

Why employers switch to PicMed for screenings

  • A single project manager owns your program from scope to wrap-up
  • W-2 nurses on every event
  • Blended delivery as standard — onsite plus PSC plus at-home so every employee has an option
  • 6–8 week planning window with compressed 2–3 week delivery available
  • Aggregate reporting benefits teams can hand to their broker — a live dashboard, not a PDF

Frequently asked questions

How long does a health screening take per employee? About 15–20 minutes for a fingerstick event and 10–15 minutes for a venipuncture event. Combined flu + biometric wellness weeks average 25 minutes.

Do employees need to fast? For a lipid panel from venipuncture, we recommend a 9–12 hour fast for the most accurate LDL and triglyceride numbers. Fingerstick lipid panels do not require fasting, though results are most comparable when the group fasts consistently.

Is participation voluntary? Yes. Screenings are strictly voluntary and ADA-compliant. Employers may offer incentives — we help design them within EEOC guidance.

What is the minimum group size for an onsite event? no minimum for a dedicated onsite event. Below that we recommend a PSC + at-home hybrid.

Do employees see their own results? Yes. Every participant gets a personalized report through the MyPicMed portal, plus optional printed summary at fingerstick events.

How do you handle remote employees? Two options: a PSC network appointment or a shipped at-home kit. Both feed into the same aggregate reporting.

Can you combine screenings with flu shots? Yes, and most clients do. A single “wellness week” event runs flu, biometrics, and HRA back to back.

Can we run this every year? Yes. Multi-year programs get a locked planning calendar and year-over-year trend reporting.
